Bertrand, Neb. — Nearly every mid-sized city and smaller, rural town in Nebraska has reached the same conclusion: A lack of housing is stifling growth. The Phelps County Community of Bertrand has reached that point. But community leaders are trying to do something about it. Area resident Scott Ford is part of a committee working on solutions to the problem…

“Back in May we sat down with the south-central economic development committee and looked over some of the needs of Bertrand and out of that a committee was formed and we decided to form a LLC called Bertrand Community Builders and really what we’re looking for here is people that want to come and invest in this LLC and really take on some of the challenges. Right now that challenge seems to be that the greatest need is housing in town.”

Ford says an informational meeting will be held Tuesday, September 6th at 6 p.m. at the Bertrand Community Building to talk about the housing shortage and the formation of the LLC.

Ford says the community needs to take action if it wants to move forward…

Ford says the group wants the LLC to be profitable, but ultimately, members want Bertrand to be viable for generations to come. Ford says anyone who believes in Bertrand and is interested in its future should attend the meeting on Tuesday, September 6th at 6 p.m. at the Bertrand Community Building.

Officials say the housing crunch is preventing jobs from being filled and many communities have prioritized job creation as a means of economic development and population growth.
