There are three Dawson County arrest warrants issued against a Lexington homicide suspect for failure to appear for court hearings in the past month and a bond violation. Jorge Vazquez-Avila is charged with Manslaughter in the August 17, 2019 death of a 22-year-old Lexington man in a downtown Lexington parking lot. Twenty-two-year-old Hussein Nuri was found unresponsive near Tep’s Bar and Grill and had been the victim of an assault. Nuri was transported to Lexington Regional Health Center where he was pronounced dead. Vazquez-Avila, now age 25, has pled innocent to Manslaughter, Possession of Methamphetamine and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia in the case and had been released on bond. He is set for a jury trial in April on the charges but, failed to show up in Dawson County District Court on March 3, 2021 for a hearing on pre-trial matters. An arrest warrant was issued for his arrest.

Vazquez-Avila has a history of accumulating charges and a number of arrest warrants while his manslaughter case has been pending.

Vazquez-Avila has an April jury trial pending from an arrest in Cozad on September 22, 2020. Vazquez-Avila is charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of a Weapons during the Commission of a Felony, Obstructing a Police Officer, Criminal Mischief between $500 – $1,500 and Second Degree Trespass. Cozad Police Department was called to a liquor store, according to a police report, where a man had been acting suspiciously. The suspect refused several commands to come out of a restroom. The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office assisted. Officers eventually kicked in the door and deployed a taser to bring the suspect, identified as Vazquez-Avila into custody. A knife and suspected methamphetamine was located among his possessions. He had been released on 10% of $20,000 bond in that case on February 8, 2021, which was the last time he was in custody in any of his pending cases. He failed to show for a hearing in the case on Friday March 12, 2021 in Dawson County District Court and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

On May 28, 2020, Vazquez-Avila was stopped by Lexington Police Department for a traffic violation near 12th and Lincoln streets. A check of his driver’s license determined it was revoked and several items of Marijuana were found, leading Vazquez-Avila to be arrested. In late September 2020, he was found guilty of Driving Under Suspension and Possession of Less than an Ounce of Marijuana. He was sentenced in Dawson County Court to two days in jail and fined $300 and the case has been closed.

Vazquez-Avila has one case pending from before his arrest on the manslaughter charge in August 2019. It stems from a Lexington Police Department arrest on May 5, 2019 near 10th and Johnson streets in Lexington. The investigating officer knew that his driver’s license had been revoked and a glass pipe was located incident to the arrest. The pipe had residue that field tested positive for Methamphetamine. On February 22, 2021 the Dawson County Attorney’s Office had filed an amended charge of Attempted Possession of Methamphetamine while dismissing charges of Driving under Suspension and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Then two days later the Dawson County District Court was notified by Dawson County Probation that Vazquez-Avila apparently failed to show numerous times for drug testing as part of his bond condition. An arrest warrant was issued on February 24, 2021 in Dawson County District Court to answer the complaint of bond violation. The amended charges have not been presented in a court hearing to be considered.

Nuri was a resident of Lexington. A police report does not outline what led up the alleged assault of the victim but, it said Vazquez-Avila was identified by witnesses in the parking lot of Tep’s Bar & Grill where the assault took place. Vazquez-Avila was later located inside of his vehicle, also described by witnesses as leaving the scene of the assault.
