A 19-year-old Lexington man faces a Felony charge of Motor Vehicle Homicide following an accident over the weekend in southwest Lexington.   Salvador Canales-Dubon was arraigned in Dawson County Court Monday morning.  He is also charged with Reckless Driving, a misdemeanor offense.

It stems from an accident around 4:54am Saturday near South Adams and Oak streets in Lexington.   According to Lexington Police Department reports, it occurred as a vehicle  was traveling southbound on South Adams Street.  The driver of the witness vehicle noticed a pickup traveling behind them that passed them at a high rate of speed.  At the same time, the driver of the witness vehicle noticed a man walking in the street ahead of them.  The witness stated they believed the pickup was going to strike the man because they didn’t think the driver of the pickup would be able to see the man,  The witness then observed the pickup strike the man in the street and observed the victim fly into the air and the pickup then continuing south and then turning off at the next available street.   The pickup returned to the scene and was observed to have “heavy front end damage”.

The 59-year-old man that was struck, died at the scene.  His name has not been released.   Police investigators believe the driver of the pickup was traveling faster than the posted speed limit as it was passing the witness vehicle. The posted speed limit of South Adams Street is 35mph.

Canales-Dubon’s next court appearance was set for October 18. 2022 at 2:30pm for preliminary hearing in Dawson County Court.  Bond for Canales-Dubon was set at $20,000.  Following the hearing, he was released from custody after $2,000 was posted for him.  Canales-Dubon told the court he intends to hire his own attorney.

The Nebraska State Patrol is assisting the Lexington Police Department in investigating the accident.  Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, Lexington Volunteer Fire Department and Priority Medical assisted at the scene.
