WNCC volleyball tops Trinidad State for 23rd win

TRINIDAD, Colo. – The 11th-ranked Western Nebraska Community College volleyball team won its 23rd match of the season after sweeping past Trinidad State Junior College 25-9, 25-20, 25-21 in a South Sub-region contest Friday afternoon.

WNCC, 23-5, will now turn its attention to the Region IX tournament which begins March 31 in Casper, Wyoming. WNCC has the No. 1 seed from the South and will play the winner of the first-round game between the North 4/South 5 winner. Pairing for the regional tournament should be released Monday.

Friday’s regular season final was dominated by WNCC with plenty of players stepping up.

Karen Cordero tallied a double-double with 18 kills and 13 digs. Cordero also had five points.

The two Gering graduates, Olivia Schaub and Elli Winkler each had eight kills. Winkler also had three digs.

Anabelle Gillen tallied 11 digs with five points, while Mariah Fukamota had 25 digs with four sets assists and five points.

Andrea Tsvetanova tallied 24 set assists along with four digs and two points, while Macey Boggs added seven set assists, six digs, and an assisted block.

Sophomore Laura Ferrao came up big as well with two kills, a solo block, an assisted block, and a service point. J’Carra Mitchell also had a kill with a point and a solo block, while Angel Nahinu had a kill and a solo block.

The Cougar volleyball team will have a sophomore recognition at halftime of the Cougar men’s basketball game with Otero on Sunday. That basketball game starts at 2 p.m. at Cougar Palace. The seven sophomores that will be recognized are Karen Cordero, Olivia Schaub, Anabelle Gillen, Alex Hernandez, Anuhea Kaohi, Andrea Tsvetanova, and Laura Ferrao.
