June 12th, 2024 | WNCC Sports Information

Western Nebraska Community College athletics will be holding plenty of summer sports camps beginning the last of June through July with volleyball, basketball and soccer camps.

The WNCC volleyball camps are special this year as interim volleyball coach Fatima Balza will be holding several camps, including a special Elite Volleyball Camp for High School players on July 5 & 6. What makes this camp special is Balza, who was hired as the volleyball coach in April, will be reunited with former WNCC volleyball coach Chris Green to conduct the 2-day volleyball skills camp.

The Elite volleyball camp will run from 9 a.m. – 12 noon and 1-3 p.m. both days with lunch on your own. The cost is $120 per participant.

Balza was a freshman with WNCC under Coach Green in 2007 when the Cougars won the NJCAA national volleyball championship. Balza went on to win two more NCAA national championships at Penn State after her time at WNCC.

Balza will also hold several other volleyball camps in June and July. The first camp is a team camp for high school teams to play against each other from June 24-25. The cost of that team camp for high school teams around the area is $40 per person. Contact Balza at balzaf1@wncc.edu to get your high school team signed up.

Other volleyball camps that are getting plenty of early online registration include a Young Campers camp for girls and boys in grades third through fifth grade on July 1. This camp will run from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and costs $60 per camper. Balza asks to bring your own lunch during this camp along with the other skills camps since they are morning and afternoon sessions.

The Middle School Camp is slated for a 2-day camp on July 8 & 9 for grades 6th through 8th. This camp is $80 and runs from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. with lunch on your own.

The High School Skills Camp is set for July 11 & 12 and is for grades 9th through 12th. This camp is also $80 and runs both days from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. with lunch from 12-1 p.m.

The final camp is a Setter/Hitter Camp on July 15 & 16 and it is for grades 9th through 12th grade. This camp is $100 and will focus on setting and hitting with plenty of reps and one-on-one instruction. If a player signs up for both the high school skills camp and the setter/hitter camp, there is a reduced combo price of just $150.

The volleyball camps will be conducted by Cougar coach Fatima Balza along with former and current players and her assistant.

After volleyball camps get finished, the basketball camp season will start and women’s basketball coach Isaac Lu will hold a 3-day girls and boys basketball camp on July 17 and 18. The cost is $70 per student and includes a T-shirt. Grades K-4 will run both days from 9 a.m. – 12 noon while grades 5-8 will be from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. The camp will be held in Cougar Palace and be instructed by Lu, his assistant coach along with current/former players.

The final camp will be a Soccer Skills Camp that will be held Monday-Thursday, July 22-25 at the Landers Soccer Complex. The camp will have two sessions, a morning session and an evening session.

The morning session will have two divisions with ages 8 and under, going from 9-11 a.m. for a recreational camp and then ages 9-12 going from 9-11:30 a.m. for a technical/tactical concepts camp. The recreational camp is $90 per participant while the concepts camp is $125 per camper. Both camps include a T-shirt and a camp ball.

The evening soccer camp is for competitive/advanced soccer players and will run from 5 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. and is also $125 per camper. The camp will be divided up into middle school and high school age kids. This camp will more intense than the morning session.

The soccer camp will be instructed by Cougar coach Todd Rasnic along with his assistants and former/current Cougars.
