Scottsbluff ran past Gering on Friday night by the final of 70-17 to lock up a district title and secure a first round home playoff game in the Class B playoffs next Friday, 10/29.

In the win over Gering the Bearcats jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter behind the play of quarterback Braeden Stull, who ran for a 63 yard touchdown and threw two other touchdowns; one covering 15 yards to Trevor Schwartz and one to Tyson Klein for 32 yards. On the Klein catch and run, it was Klein doing most the work with a broken tackle and sprint to the end zone.

Two of those early touchdowns came off Gering interceptions.

Gering would hang tough getting their first points of the night on long 80 yard touchdown drive that featured a blend of run and pass. The Bulldogs would cap it off with Jackson Howard connecting with Kaden Bohnsack on a 13 yard scoring pass.

After a Scottsbluff fumble on the ensuing possession the Bulldogs were knocking on the door for another touchdown when a penalty set them back and eventually they settled for a Luis Avila 27 yard field goal to cut the Scottsbluff lead to 21-10.

There were plenty more points to come in the first half.

At the 9:08 mark it was Stull again, this time back to the ground with a five yard touchdown run.

Sebastien Boyle would then get into the mix for the first of three touchdowns as he scored with 5:38 to play in the half on a 29 yard run.

There were three touchdowns then scored in the final 25 seconds of the first half. Boyle had a nine yard touchdown run with :25 to play, then Gering got a kickoff return for a touchdown from Tanner Gartner with :11 to play in the half, and then on the final play of the half Boyle busted loose straight up the middle for a 80 yard touchdown run, he was nearly untouched.

Scottsbluff led at halftime 49-17.

The Cats scored three more times in the second half on a Stull third quarter touchdown run, then the Cats blocked a punt that Tyrone Shanks picked up and ran into the end zone in the fourth quarter, and with under six minutes to play in the game Jackson Ostdiek capped off the scoring with a 5 yard TD scamper.

Boyle finished with 274 yards rushing and three touchdowns while Stull ran for 130 yards and three touchdowns. Stull threw two touchdown passes.

With the win Scottsbluff improved to 7-2, they won the district and now they ready to play a first round home playoff game against Beatrice next week. A win in that game would likely set up a second round game on the road at #2 seed Aurora.

Gering closes their season at 2-7 but with plenty of strides made as a program, with two near wins they couldn’t finish in the closing moments against Lexington and Mitchell, while they also led McCook at halftime 3-0 on the road.

Gering had bright spots from Gartner on offense and special teams. Despite throwing four interceptions Jackson Howard is just a sophomore and will give Gering a player to build their offense around in the coming years. Carmelo Timblin was a willing tackler most of the evening for Gering.
