Governor Pete Ricketts was joined by Nebraska Department of Transportation officials today (Tuesday) to announce formation of a new NDOT State Operations Center based in Omaha.

This spring, NDOT’s State Operations Center and the District 2 Operations Center merged to create one centralized command center to monitor and operate the state’s entire highway network.

NDOT Director John Selmer said the new center brings together the latest technology and resources to help manage everyday issues in addition to emergency response.

“I kind of look it like a pipeline, and when do I start getting turbulent flow. So, some things that we can look at are, are there differential speeds out there, are there different mixes of vehicles, all of a sudden there’s a lot of more semi traffic or other things that are causing disruption or turbulent flow. What’s happening on the ramps, are we starting to see a lot of volume on the ramps out there. So, the hope is that we become much more predictive,” said Selmer.

He said the newly organized SOC will bring additional efficiency and consistency across the state, and provide better management of the overall system.
