July 26th, 2021 | Zach McKinstry & KNEB Sports

Here’s the recap from the voice of the Pioneers, Zach McKinstry, for the Saturday home loss to Hastings and then below you’ll find a quick summary of the Sunday loss to the Sodbusters.

Pios strand 17, drop fifth straight

Coming off of the no-hitter and 8 hits in their last 3 games, game one of the two game set against the Hastings Sodbusters saw the Pioneers get 14 free passes on 12 walks and 2 hit-by-pitches, but once again the bats could not capitalize when it mattered en route to a 7-3 loss. Western Nebraska would leave the bases loaded 4 times, including with no outs in the 6th and 1-out in the 8th, but could not score a run in either instance.

Hastings bats had a couple of big moments with 4 runs crossing in the top of the first on an RBI single then a 3-Run Home Run off of the bat of Logan Johnstone, both with 2 outs. They would add one more in the second after a pair of singles and a wild pitch and would lead 5-0. The Pios would get 3 back in the bottom half but would avoid putting up a huge number after the first 4 batters reached before a double play recorded the first two outs.

Only two more runs would score on a 2-run blast from Trevor Mattson to put the Sodbusters up 7-3. The Pioneers had tons of chances, loading the bases in the 6th, 7th, and 8th, but could not score. They would finish 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position.

Randy Garza was tagged with the loss, allowing all 7 earned runs, while Caden Edwards and Paul Panduro did a good job out of relief, combining to allow only 2 hits and 2 walks over 4 innings while picking up 6 K’s. James Shimishita was given the win after going 2.1 innings of relief and getting out of those bases loaded jams.

Sodbusters sweep two game set with Sunday win

The losing streak reached six straight on Sunday as the Pioneers fell at home to Hastings by the final of 5-4. Trailing 3-1 the Sodbusters scored single runs in the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth innings ro rally for the road win.

Pioneers starting pitcher Jonathan Cymrot was excellent as he worked five innings and struck out seven while allowing one run on three hits. The loss was charged to Casey Candiotti, who was tagged for six hits and four runs (three earned) in 3 1/3 innings pitched.

JT Waldon homered twice in the loss as the Pios fell to 9-10 in the second half Clark Division standings. They’re currently in fourth place in the division in the second half.

Tonight they’ll start a four game road trip with stops at Sioux Falls and Pierre. The first of two at Sioux Falls tonight and we’ll have the broadcast with Zach on KNEB AM 960/100.3 FM starting at 5:20, first pitch at 5:35.
