Nebraska leaders are expressing approval of a U.S. Supreme Court decision issued Thursday that struck down the Clean Power Plan rule adopted during the Obama administration.

Through the rule promoted by the Environmental Protection Agency, States would have been required to achieve carbon emission reductions for coal-fired power plants by forcing plant owners to subsidize renewable-energy sources, or reduce their own energy production.

Attorney General Doug Peterson said “The Court’s decision makes clear that Congress and the States, not un-elected federal bureaucrats, should decide how to manage our nation’s power grid.”

In a statement from his office, U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse said “Congress writes the laws, not bureaucrats… (and) The EPA’s loss is a win for the rule of law, for self-government, and for Nebraska farmers and ranchers.”
