Mitchell High School sophomore Cael Peters came up just short of a state title on Wednesday in Columbus at the Class C State Golf Tournament, falling in a playoff to the champion, Noah Carpenter, of Palmyra.
Peters finished 8 over par in his opening round and started the day six shots back of the leader. But on a tough scoring day Peters posted the best round in the field with a three over par 75. After Carpenter bogeyed the 18th hole the two were tied at +11 and would decide it in a playoff.
It would take three playoff holes to decide it and eventually it was Carpenter with a birdie on the third playoff hole for the win. Carpenter played the three playoff holes at two under while Peters played the three holes at one under par; going par, birdie, par.
Peters two day score was 155.
Mitchell finished 9th in the team standings with a two day combined score of 746 (+170) while Columbus Scotus rolled to the title, winning by 29 shots over Doniphan-Trumbull. Scotus posted a +64, 640.
Jace Nelson of Gordon-Rushville finished T-23 with a two day score of 171 (+27), Ethan Thyne of Mitchell was T-44 at 181 (+37), and then next in line from the region was Braxten Swires from Bridgeport in a tie for 53rd place.
Class D wrap up from North Platte
The top performer from the region was Kimball freshman Kyler Lusche, who finished in 14th place with a two day total of 168. Lusche opened with a round of 81 yesterday and then closed today shooting 87 to finish at +24.
The individual champion was Teegan Sonneman from St. Pat’s, he finished at +5 for the tournament with a total of 149.
Crawford finished tied for 11th place in the team race with a two day combined score of 768. Overton won the title shooting 681.
