There were just five combined hits at Cleveland Field on Tuesday night as the WESTCO Zephyrs beat Gering Platte Valley Companies 1-0 in senior legion action.

Z’s starting pitcher Hunter McCollum was lights out on the mound with a complete game shutout that included 13 strikeouts and just one hit allowed. After allowing a two out single to Dalton Wiese in the first inning, McCollum retired the final 19 hitters he faced in the game.

Wiese, Gering’s starter, also came up with a big effort on the hill as he worked all six innings for the complete game while striking out eight and allowing just four hits. The one run Wiese allowed was unearned.

The only run of the game came from WESTCO in the bottom of the sixth. After the first two hitters were retired it was McCollum coming up with a single and after advancing to second on a passed ball, he’d score on a RBI single from Andon Pittman.

With the win the Zephyrs improved to 22-13 while, with the loss, Gering now sits at 8-11.

In the JR’s game it was the WESTCO Express rolling over Gering B&C Steel by the final of 9-2 as they improved to 27-12.

Gering will play at Alliance tonight (Wednesday) and Jeff Kelley will have that broadcast on KMOR 93.3 FM and KMORfm.com starting at approximately 7 pm with first pitch 15 minutes after the start of the pregame show. B&C Steel will play the early game at 5 pm.

WESTCO will be at home tonight to take on Chadron as part of a JR/SR doubleheader at Cleveland Field. The JR’s game will start at 5 pm with a tentative start time of 7:30 pm for the SR’s game for the Zephyrs.
