They say if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it; but when it is broken, staff at one local tourism attraction wants to ensure they fix it the right way.

Some major repairs are needed on one of the walls at one of the buildings, and are bringing in experts next week to make those repairs.

Staff at Scotts Bluff National Monument are teaming up with experts from Cornerstones Organization and Historic Preservation Training Center, their National Park Service equivalent. These two historic and cultural preservation specialists will aid in the repairs to an outside maintenance garage parking lot entrance wall that was built in 1936 where the adobe has now failed.

Superintendent of Scotts Bluff National Monument Dan Morford explains.

“We’re going to be making around 400 blocks and then let them dry, and then in August the crew will be back again and we will actually be rebuilding a section of the little wall and a section of the building with adobe bricks back to the same product that was built there originally.”

The initial class is not open to the public, though later classes on adobe brick-making may be offered as they will need approximately 400 bricks for the restoration.

Scotts Bluff National Monument is free to the public and offers a variety of hiking trails, and is open from sunrise to sunset.
