Two Gering High School cross country runners were injured late Tuesday afternoon when they were hit by a pickup at the intersection of 17th and M Streets in Gering.

According to a Gering Police investigator’s crash report, the runners were going north on the east side of the intersection shortly before 5:00 p.m., when they were struck by a westbound GMC pickup driven by a rural Gering man.

The injured runners, 16- and 17-year-old males, were taken from the scene to Regional West Medical Center, their conditions not available as neither was listed in the hospital directory.

The driver of the pickup told investigators the sun was glaring into his windshield, and he did not see the pedestrians until he was close to the intersection, hit the brakes and believed he had slowed to about 15 mph before the impact.

The investigative report said physical evidence at the scene appeared consistent with the pickup driver’s explanation, the sun was low to the west and slightly south, at an angle and direction that would have had an impact on visibility. No citations were issued.

EDITOR’S NOTE: A previous version of this story said the incident took place Monday. KNEB News regrets the error.
