York wins 28-27 OT thriller over Crete
August 29th, 2021 | Parker Cyza

YORK – An hour and a half lightening delay came as soon as regulation ended at 9:45 central time. Crete had just marched down the field with Isaac Kracl scoring from short distance, and Tadd Tebrink caught the two-point conversion from quarterback Braden Schmeckpeper to tie the game at 21.

The Dukes and the Cardinals then sought shelter from the lightening delay. York coach Glenn Snodgrass said the team ate fruit snacks, drank water and tried to stay moving during the delay.

Just after 11 p.m., overtime began.

The Dukes had the football first and scored on a quarterback keeper by Ryan Seevers and the extra point made it 28-21. Crete then had a chance to respond. They scored a touchdown on 3rd-and-goal, and instead of kicking an extra point to tie the game, Crete and coach Mark Newmeyer went for two-points and the win. The try came up unsuccessful as Schmeckpeper couldn’t complete a pass into the endzone and the Dukes walked away with a 28-27 week one win.

Experienced junior running back Marley Jensen led the Dukes in rushing with 73 yards and a score. Seevers added 64 on the ground and two scores. Seevers also threw for 142 yards and one 53 yard touchdown in the second quarter to Dalton Snodgrass, the Dukes first touchdown of the season.

Crete was aided by Kracl, who finished with over 200 yards rushing and three scores. Schmeckpeper added a touchdown run.

York (1-0) will next play this Friday night at 6p.m. against Alliance on KOOL Radio 103.5.
