Former Nebraska football coach Frank Solich announced today that he is stepping down from his current position at Ohio University to focus on his health. He led Ohio for 16 seasons and says in the end his health just wouldn’t let him continue.

Solich became the coach of the Cornhuskers in 1998 after Tom Osborne and coached for six seasons. Previously he played at Nebraska from 1963-65 and afterward coached high school. He joined Osborne’s staff in 1979 as the freshman coach and became the running backs coach in 1982. His head coaching record at Nebraska was 58-19 with three 10-win seasons and a Big 12 championship in 1999. However, he was pressured to repeat the Osborne-era success and was fired before the end of the 2003 season after taking his team to a 9-3 record.

Solich owns a career coaching record of 173-101. His 173 overall wins rank as the fourth most among active NCAA FBS head coaches. He is the winningest head coach in Mid-American Conference history with 115 overall victories. He also talks about why he decided to state at Ohio.

Solich will be replaced by Tim Albin who has been with him since day one at Ohio. Albin was on Solich’s staff at Nebraska as an offensive assistant.
