Seward splits with Hastings
It was all Hastings in girls high school basketball action Thursday evening at Seward High School, as the Tigers dominated the Seward girls in the season opener for both teams. Hastings never trailed in the contest, as they went up 10-6 after one quarter. By halftime, they extended their lead to 39 -16, and coasted to a 69-39 victory over the Lady Jays. Hastings was paced by senior McKinsey Long’s 23 points, and 14 points from senior Libby Landgren. Senior Hannah Benedict led Seward with 18 points.
In the nightcap, the Seward Boys eaked out a 44-41 win over Hastings, despite 8 for 23 shooting from the free-throw line. The teams traded leads early, with Seward leading at the half 23-21. The Bluejays maintained the lead the rest of the game, but never by more than 6 points. 20 turnovers by Hastings, to just 9 for Seward, offset the Jay’s dismal night at the charity stripe. Seward junior Drew Covalt led Seward with 14 points, while Hastings was led by sophomore Brayden Power’s a game-high 15 points.
York dominates GBB, falls in close BBB game
The York Dukes girls basketball opened the season by shutting down the Ralston Rams 65-12 in Ralston on Thursday. Anna Briggs and Maddie Pohl led the way with 12 points each for the Dukes. Masa Scheierman and Kiersten Portwine also finished in double-figures with 10 point apiece.
The York boys lost their opening match to the Rams. The Dukes trailed for much of the second half, bought fought back in the fourth quarter to make it a one-possession game. Ralston went on to win 58-55. Both Dukes’ basketball team will take on Waverly next Thursday at home.
