On Tuesday, NCAA’s committee on infractions sanctioned Creighton University’s men’s basketball program with probation, limits on scholarships and program funding but didn’t ban the school from post season play resulting from a former coach’s alleged involvement in a 2017 bribery scandal. In a release from the NCAA, officials concluded that former Creighton men’s basketball assistant coach Preston Murphy violated ethical conduct rules and athletics director Bruce Rasmussen failed to report that potential violation. The committee made this statement on the matte “The violations largely stem from individuals permitting personal relationships to cloud their judgment and influence their decision-making. Specifically, the assistant coach prioritized loyalty to his friend, the agent associate; and the athletics director looked past alarming conduct based on his trust in the assistant coach.”

The school will face the following penalties from the NCAA. Two years of probation and a $5,000 fine plus 1% of the men’s basketball program budget. Creighton itself issued a number of self imposed penalties due to the case. Including cutting one men’s basketball scholarship the next two years. A reduction in official visits by six over a two year period. The Bluejays will also reduce men’s basketball recruiting person days by 10% from the previous four-year average for the two-year probationary period. Creighton will also prohibit complimentary admission to home games for all prospects and coaches in November 2021. A two-year show-cause order for the former assistant coach. During that period, any NCAA member school employing him must restrict him from any athletically related duties unless it shows cause why the restrictions should not apply
