Cross County, Meridian, Osceola advance in Monday’s CRC tournament

YORK – The second round of the Crossroads Conference basketball tournaments took place in York’s City Auditorium. The top seeds and defending champions Cross County girls, and the Osceola boys advanced past its opponents. The Meridian girls and the Cross County boys also won.

On Tuesday, the CRC tournament’s second round will continue in York. McCool Junction and BDS girls will play at 3 pm. The winner plays Cross County in the semifinals on Thursday. Nebraska Lutheran and Shelby-Rising City will follow at 4:30 with the winner playing Osceola in the semifinals on Thursday. Then a girls matchup with Osceola and Exeter-Milligan at 6 pm with the winner playing Meridian in the semifinals on Thursday, and the final game Tuesday will be BDS and McCool Junction at 7:30. The winner plays Cross County in semifinals on Thursday.

Monday’s CRC Second Round Results

Girls: (1) Cross County 43, (9) East Butler 27

The Cross County Lady Cougars began their CRC title defense by taking on East Butler. Cross County’s Josi Noble led with 11 points for the Cougars, Lilly Peterson scored nine and Chloe Sandell added seven. Nicole Buresh and Kate Rathjen had eight and seven points respectively for East Butler. Cross County will advance to Thursday’s CRC semifinals and will play the winner of McCool Junction and BDS.

Boys: (1) Osceola 49, (8) High Plains 25

The top-seed and defending CRC champions Osceola beat High Plains 49-25. Kale Gustafson for the Bulldogs erupted for 26 points in his team’s win. Lane Urkoski for High Plains had a team-leading eight points. Osceola’s win will move them back into the CRC Semifinals, where on Thursday they will play the winner of Nebraska Lutheran and Shelby-Rising City.

Girls: (2) Meridian 45, (10) Dorchester 22

Last year’s CRC runner-up Meridian opened the 2022 tournament with a strong win over the Dorchester Longhorns. The Lady Mustangs came out of the gate strong with 19 points in the first quarter, and they held Dorchester to just 3 points. Meridian’s lead would not relinquish. Ally Kort for Meridian finished with a game-high 11 points. Kim Schropfer added 9, and Jaala Stewart had 8. Dorchester was led by Atley Zoubek who had 6 points. With the win, Meridian will head back to Thursday’s semifinals.

Boys: (2) Cross County 58, (7) Exeter-Milligan 20

Cross County’s Haiden Hild knocked down three three-pointers in the first quarter of Monday’s win 58-20 over the Exeter-Milligan Timberwolves. Hild finished the game with a team-high 14 points. Cory Hollinger for the Cougars also got into double figures with 10 points. Carter Seim had eight, and Toby Waller came off the bench to throw in eight points. Kole Svec led the Timberwolves with six points. Cross County will play the winner of BDS and McCool Junction in Thursday’s CRC Seminfinals.
