In an annual tradition that has become a viral sensation, David Schuler from Schuler Red Angus continues to captivate audiences with his unique holiday celebration known as “Cattle Art.”

Schuler, who ranches with his family near Bridgeport, Nebraska, says “Cattle Art” began many years ago in a not-so-public way. This tradition involves using a feed wagon to draw designs with silage, while the red cattle contribute to the artwork, forming intricate shapes.

“Growing up in high school and helping dad with chores, I got bored doing the same thing every day,” Schuler said. “So, I decided to make some shapes or make our brand.”

Schuler’s inspiration for Cattle Art came from his experiences in high school, and it has evolved into a yearly event. The tradition gained recognition when the governor shared one of the designs, prompting Schuler to explore more themes.

One notable design was the healthcare workers’ tribute during the COVID-19 pandemic. Schuler described the creation of an EKG with a heart shape formed by the cows, capturing a photo with a drone from above. This design went viral, reaching millions and even being featured on ABC News.

For the 2023 holiday season, Schuler crafted a design featuring a gift with a cross and a bow on top. The 800 mother cows participated in forming the shape, and the resulting photo was shared on Facebook with a message: “Merry Christmas from our cows to yours. Remember the reason for the season and why we celebrate the ultimate gift for all.”

Despite the playful nature of Cattle Art, it serves as an effective marketing tool for Schuler Red Angus.

“There’s two that took off more than others. But nothing compares to the health care workers one… it reached millions and really put me on the map for some other things that I’ve done since with cattle art.”
