Last weekend started the most important trek for the Region IX men’s and women’s basketball teams as all the teams are now engaged in sub-region play.

The importance or the standings is obvious of the winners of the divisions get the top seed into the Region IX tournament in March. Plus the winners of the South Division on the women’s side and the North Division on the men’s side get to host the regional tournaments. The women’s Region IX tournament is slated for March 9-11 with first round games slated for March 4 at the higher seed.

After one full week, it could be a battle do the final week in February.

The women’s south division have three teams on top with 1-0 marks after WNCC defeated McCook 68-56 on Friday. Northeastern Junior College is also 1-0 after topping Lamar Community College 74-61 on Tuesday, while Otero is 1-0 when they beat McCook on January 13.

The north division has Laramie County Community College, Casper College, and Western Wyoming Community College at 1-0 after the opening weekend of conference play. Casper defeated Northwest 72-55, LCCC defeated Central Wyoming 64-42, and Western Wyoming handled Eastern Wyoming 66-55.

The men’s conference standings are also packed. The winner of the north on the men’s side will host the regional tourney beginning March 9. First round games will be played March 4. The north division has three unbeaten teams as Western Wyoming defeated EWC on Saturday 100-75, LCCC topped Central Wyoming 89-81, and Northwest defeated Casper College 93-84.

The south division has four unbeaten. Otero is on top with a 2-0 conference mark after beating McCook 78-64 and North Platte 90-69 on January 13-14.

WNCC, Trinidad, and NJC are all 1-0 after wins last week. WNCC won their second straight with a 75-71 win over McCook, while NJC defeated Lamar 91-87 and Trinidad State beat North Platte 99-88.
