Thirty-three members of the Scottsbluff High School Math Team will be headed to Las Vegas, Nevada, July 6-12 for the Mu Alpha Theta National Convention. Mu Alpha Theta is the National High School and Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society. In 2023, the SHS Math Team attended this convention in Fayetteville, Arkansas for the first time and placed 10th overall, the highest a first-year team has placed at the contest.
SHS Math students have been practicing throughout the summertime to prepare for the convention. These students will take five to seven competition exams over the course of four days. In addition, they will enjoy a social outing, tour, and show organized by Mu Alpha Theta at The Sphere on Wednesday, July 10th.
Sophomore Hilario Vaquera Martinez has already been notified he has made the National Top 10 in the Theta Division Chalk Talk event. This means he is a guaranteed medalist. He will be giving his talk live to a panel of judges between 2:45 pm and 5:45 pm MST on Monday, July 8th. In addition, Mr. Shelby Aaberg has been elected the next Mu Alpha Theta Region 1 Governor and will serve on the board for the next four years. His term will begin at the 2024 National Convention.
This trip would not be possible without the support of the local community. The SHS Math Team received over $23,000 in donations which will cover all registration and hotel costs for the attending students and teachers. The Math Team would like to thank the following generous donors:
