The Riverside Discovery Center is hoping to make some upgrades and improvements to their bison exhibit.

Scottsbluff City Council liaison Matt Salomon told the council that water constantly pools in the exhibit because the bison have been trampling dirt into the drain.

He says the hope is to raise the roughly $10,000 for the project to put in a new drain system to ensure that water isn’t always pooling.

“They going to expand the back area, the holding areas, so it’s larger. With the goal , they’d like to have a herd of four, and there’s ways of getting that herd of four, but that’s a long term goal. And then they would have enough space that they won’t have water issues that come with that.”

Back in May, the zoo euthanized its 22-year-old American Bison Doc after suffering from advanced aged arthritis, leaving only two female bison at the Riverside Discovery Center.
