Nebraska Chief Medical Officer Dr. Gary Athone has been making a tour of the state this week, taking time to personally thank health care and public health workers for all their efforts during the COVID pandemic.

During a stop in Scottsbluff Wednesday, Athone told KNEB News he was surprised by getting to be present at a Scotts Bluff County Health Department mobile vaccination clinic at the Western Sugar Factory.

“What a great opportunity to see how they set this up. And again, it’s a great example of how well the health departments work with the community as far as getting people immunized, especially now, and vaccinated,” said Anthone. “It’s so important they’re doing this. Here in Nebraska, we’ve done a great job of getting people vaccinated, and it’s all due to the public health departments.”

In addition to the stop at the shot clinic, Athone was visiting health care professionals at Regional West Medical Center, and said it just wasn’t possible during the worst of the pandemic to get out across the state and provide that in-person support.

His tour rounds out the rest of this week with stops in North Platte, McCook, and he’ll take part in the NEBRASKAland Days parade on Saturday.
