If you’ve received a large pink postcard that notifies you of a property tax increase, that’s your invitation to hear why a city, county or school district is asking for more of your money.

The cards are part of the Truth in Taxation law that took effect this year, intended to give property owners a chance to voice their opinion when property tax requests go above a certain threshold with a joint public hearing.

The threshold is a two percent increase from the prior year, plus the percentage of increase in property valuation for that specific subdivision.

For example, in Scotts Bluff County, representatives of the cities of Scottsbluff, Gering and Minatare Public Schools will be on hand for the meeting next Monday at 6:05 p.m., at Judy Chaloupka Theater on the WNCC Scottsbluff campus.

In Morrill County, officials from the County and Bayard School District will explain their property tax request at a meeting next Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Morrill County Commissioner’s Room.
