KAAPA Ethanol Crop Progress Report for the week of October 18th

The fall harvest is full steam ahead. The latest crop progress data from USDA shows that harvest is ahead of the five year average pace, but behind where we were a year ago for several crops. Soil moisture continues to be in short supply though across much of the country.

As the crop progress reports start to wind down this is likely the last week we see corn maturity ( 97% of the nations corn crop is mature) and soybean dropping leaves (95% of the country soybean crop has dropped leaves). As for corn condition the nation continues to hold at 60% good to excellent. Nebraska corn is rated 69% good to excellent and Kansas corn is rated 54% good to excellent. Soybean condition is no longer reported.

Now to the harvest numbers; 52% of the nations corn crop is in the bin. Kansas has 75% of the corn harvested and Nebraska has 41% of the corn crop harvested. Both of these are ahead of the respective 5 year average. North Carolina and Texas are duking it out for the first to finish corn harvest. Each state have over 90% of the corn crop harvested.

Soybean harvest is now considered 60% complete nationwide. Kansas has harvested 41% of the crop and Nebraska has harvested 76% of the soybean crop. Minnesota may continue showing signs of a drought stressed crop as soybean harvest is already 91% complete. That is 27% ahead of the five year average.

Cotton harvest is really just getting going good with 28% of the crop harvested nationwide. Northern states for cotton like Kansas and Oklahoma have yet to harvest 10% of the their respective cotton crops. Meanwhile Louisiana is the only state to have over 50% of the cotton crop harvested.

Sorghum harvest is 59% complete nationwide. That is 9% ahead of the five year average. Nebraska sorghum harvest is 20% ahead of the five year average at 58% complete. Kansas sorghum harvest is 44% complete. That is 14% ahead of the five year average.

Winter wheat planting is getting closer to the finish line now 70% complete nationwide. Kansas has 75% of the winter wheat planted. Nebraska has 93% of the winter wheat planted. Both are near the five year average. Winter wheat emergence is rated 44% complete nationwide. Kansas has 47% of the winter wheat emerged. Nebraska has 76% of the winter wheat emerged. Both are within 1% of their five year average.

Pasture and range condition in Nebraska is rated 15% good to excellent. Kansas pasture and range is rated 35% good to excellent and North Dakota range is considered 90% poor to very poor.

Topsoil moisture in Kansas is rated 63% adequate to surplus. Nebraska topsoil moisture is 60% adequate to surplus. Meanwhile Wyoming is rated 30% adequate to surplus.

Subsoil moisture is rated 57% adequate to surplus in Kansas and 47% adequate to surplus in Nebraska.
