Gering hasn’t had a three win season since 2012. On Friday night it was their Homecoming game against Mitchell and a spot to possibly win their third game of the year. It wasn’t to be as the Tigers prevail on the road in double overtime by the final of 28-26.

This game went to overtime after Mitchell missed a short field goal attempt towards the end of regulation that could have won it.

In the first overtime it was Gering scoring first on a short run from Kaden Bohnsack but Gering missed the extra point and it was 20-14. Mitchell answered on a Carter Reisig short touchdown run but a missed extra point for the Tigers kept the score tied at 20-20 and forced a second overtime session.

Mitchell had the ball first in 2OT and it was Reisig with another one yard plunge and then Mitchell decided to go for two and Reisig hit a pass for the conversion and the Tigers were in front 28-20.

Gering’s final crack at it resulted in a Jackson Howard touchdown pass to Damien Billie to pull the Bulldogs to within two points. Needing the two point conversion to tie Gering’s pass fell incomplete as the Tigers won it in dramatic fashion.

The first half featured just one scoring play in the second quarter with Howard connecting on a four yard touchdown pass to Tyler Garrett and Gering led 7-0 at halftime.

In the second half Gering leaned on their defense to rise to the occassion multiple times after the offense turned the ball over.

Gering fumbled the opening kickoff and Mitchell was able to convert that turnover into points with Cael Peters scoring on a five yard run but a missed kick and Gering still led 7-6.

Gering then tossed one of their four second half interceptions and Mitchell converted that one into points on another Peters touchdown run and this time Mitchell got the two point conversion to go in front 14-7.

Gering hung tough, though, and got right back into the game on a screen pass from Howard to Tanner Gartner that covered 36 yards to paydirt as Gering tied the game at 14-14.

Howard threw three other interceptions that Mitchell couldn’t turn into points as the Bulldogs defense kept them in the game. Gering turned it over a total of five times in the second half.

Mitchell put up 297 yards of total offense (209 rush, 88 passing) while the Bulldogs totaled 217 yards of offense

An obvious heartbreaking loss that Gering will have to bounce back from as they’ll close the regular season out at home next week against Scottsbluff, who survived at home to beat McCook on Friday night by the final of 21-14.
