A stretch of Panhandle roadway will get an upgrade next year, but it won’t be the portion most have been waiting for after an open house nearly two years ago.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation says Highway 26 from near South Morrill Road to the western edge of Mitchell will get a mill and asphalt overlay at a cost estimated at nearly $6.9 million.

Also part of the NDOT fiscal 2025 construction program in the Panhandle will be mill and resurfacing projects on Highway 30 between Kimball and Bushnell, two sections of Highway 2 in Sheridan County and one portion of Nebraska 250, also in Sheridan County. The 15 projects on the list for District 5 will cost approximately $56.7 million.

The anticipated expansion of Highway 26 and Link 62-A from Minatare to US 385 fell into the NDOT plans for 2026 to 2030.

The selection of adding two lanes on either side of that existing roadway has yet to be announced, but NDOT documents say it will cost an estimated $94.7 million, up from preliminary figures ranging from nearly $77 million to more than $81 million.
