The local chapter of Habitat for Humanity celebrated completion of their 22nd home this past weekend with a dedication ceremony with the new owner and her family.

There were smiles all around as Idalia Salazar and her two young daughters accepted the keys to the house recently completed near Community Christian School in Scottsbluff.

Habitat board member Jim Kozal thanked the family for sharing the journey in completing their new home. “We’re just pleased to be a part of it, and we hope we’ve provided a great place for you to continue to grow and love as a family,” said Kozal. “So, thank you for being a part of this journey. It’s been a little longer than we thought it would be, but that sometimes happens to us.”

Carolyn Escamilla, chair of the committee that selects beneficiary families, said it’s always a process that brings a lot of joy.

“Two of my most favorite things as the chair of family selection is, of course, selecting the families; going over and telling them that they’re the winners. I know I always shed a tear or two from happiness. And then the second favorite part is seeing the completion, and watching a beautiful family get a new home,” Escamilla said.

Habitat committee members also thanked all the sponsors and more than 60 volunteers that made the home a reality.

Around $40,000 was raised in donations during the course of the project, and Habitat representatives say they hope they can do even better during the next home build.
