Authorities say they’re continuing to investigate a roadside accident about 25 miles south of Chadron last week in which a motorist from Hemingford was struck and killed after stopping and getting out of his vehicle.

Dawes County Attorney Vance Haug says in a release 72-year-old Chester Ansley died from his injuries after he had apparently stopped on the shoulder of Highway 385 Friday morning to retrieve an item that had fallen out of the back of his pickup, and he was hit by a northbound Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by a Chadron resident.

Haug says the accident took place in what were termed ‘smoky conditions’ due to western wildfires, and was witnessed by southbound motorists approaching the scene.

He says neither drugs nor alcohol appear to have been involved, and there are currently no charges pending; however, further review of the evidence is on-going, including pending reports by an accident re-constructionist.

The Dawes County Coroner’s office was assisted by the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office, and Hemingford and Chadron Fire Departments.
