It’s been a whirlwind week for Taylor Briggs, who’s been named the new head volleyball coach at Bridgeport High School. Briggs was set to be on staff with the Bridgeport program but then last week Jackie Rahmig decided to step down as head coach and now Briggs steps into the leading role for her first head coaching job at the high school level.

“First off I’m really excited. I was looking forward to being around my family and getting to watch my brother and sister compete. And then when I found out that there was an opening at Bridgeport I got really excited. I have family from there and have spent summers there and feel really connected to the community.”

Briggs (formerly Taylor Peters) graduated from Mitchell High School in 2014 and she’s the daughter of Mitchell coach Michelle Peters. Most recently Briggs had been coaching volleyball at Axtell High School in Nebraska as an assistant, where she worked under Brad Nelson, who has been the head coach there for 30 years. Briggs also coached junior high volleyball and basketball at Axtell.

Briggs says Coach Rahmig, even after stepping down, has been a helping hand if needed, “Coach Rahmig has been very helpful. It’s been a fun transition, I mean there’s a very talented group and an established program already so I’m really excited for that. Again, she’s (Rahmig) been really helpful and I look forward to working with her and asking her when I need some help.”

As a Mitchell High product, Briggs says she’s already looking forward to those Bulldogs vs. Tigers matchups, “It’ll be fun. I know Mitchell/Bridgeport games from experience are always pretty packed and competitive so it’s always a fun environment. Of course there will be some bragging rights with my brother, Cael, on the line. But It’s just going to be fun to be in that type of competitive environment again.”

Briggs says the goal for her program is to be a consistent presence in the panhandle year in and year out with appearances in district finals and possible trips to the state tournament.

Bridgeport last season under Coach Rahmig finished 20-11. Overall, on the girls side at the prep level, Bridgeport has some of the top talent all across the region.
