Four engineering firms have submitted proposals to handle the next phase of work toward a regional landfill proposed by the cities of Gering and Scottsbluff.

Gering City Engineer Annie Folck explained that TriHydro Corporation has already completed much of the heavy lifting for the proposed site north of Scottsbluff in Sioux County.

“Making sure that there were no threatened or endangered species, making sure the groundwater was at an appropriate depth, making sure that the soils were appropriate, all of those things that take a little more in-depth engineering, drilling and things that it’s a site that we ultimately could get a permitted and start licensed,” said Folck. “And so, we’ve gone through all those steps, and now we’re at the point where we’re ready to actually start the permitting process, and the design, and bidding the project.”

Folck says staff will take time vetting the proposals before making a recommendation to the City Council at a future meeting.

More than a year ago, officials said the current Gering landfill had just over four years of space remaining before it would need to be closed.
