Pioneers put up 23 runs in win over Gem City

After scoring 13 runs on 22 hits over the Gem City Bison on Monday night the Western Nebraska Pioneers went to another level on Wednesday in a 23-16 win in Laramie.

How bout 23 runs and 28 hits!

The Pioneers got a leadoff homer from Eric Smelko and scored six runs in the first inning to set the tone in the seven inning victory. They scored in every inning but the third.

Ty Callahan, Jace Jeremiah, Alex Zerfass, and PK Walsh combined to go 18-21 with 11 RBI and 12 runs scored on the night.

Jeremiah leads the Independence League in RBI this season with 35 after he drove in six last night.

It was also a big day and night for head coach Antonio Garcia, who’s accepted an assistant coaching job at St. Louis University.

The winning pitcher on Tuesday was Gunnar Nartker, who worked four frames and struck out two while allowing six runs on eight hits.

Tonight the Pioneers wrap up their series at Gem City with first pitch at 6 pm. Coverage on KNEB AM 960/100.3 FM will start at 5:45 pm.
