Kimball residents will be asked to re-authorize a half-cent sales and use tax for economic development later this year.

Presented with options for special election dates in May, June and July, the Kimball City Council Tuesday night set June 13 for a vote on the LB840 question.

With the potential to also place an LB357 half-cent sales tax for infrastructure before voters this year, likely aimed a paying for a new pool, Council members Don Muench and Christy Warner expressed preference for a June election date.

“People that are moving to the community, all of our new housing, and the things we need to grow on to support, not only Sentinel (U.S. Air Force missile project) and Clean Harbors, etc., etc., and it goes on and on, people are going to be looking for recreation, people are going to be looking for amenities, people are going to be looking for fun for their kids,” said Muench. “So, this is something I do think we need to look at doing together.”

Warner replied, “No, and the taxpayer just shouldn’t have to pay for two special elections.”

The council has yet to decide if and when a half-cent infrastructure sales tax will go to the voters, but the city has taken steps toward that question, and council member Gabe Ingram said it would be easier to provide information on both at the same time supporting both ballot questions.

June is also when the Kimball city pool opens, and this summer will be the last season for that facility.

Kimball’s current LB840 authorization ends in September this year.
