The City of Gering is hoping to receive a $400,000 Land and Water Conservation Grant that would be used to upgrade pickleball courts proposed for Oregon Trail Park.
The City Council approved a resolution last week authorizing staff to apply for the funding, which would pay for additional amenities such as shelters, lighting, seating and ADA-compliant restroom renovations.
Pat Heath, City Administrator, tells us staff is hoping it won’t take long to find out if the application gets approved. “It would look like, right now, we would hear back sometime in the spring and then we would probably begin construction hopefully by late next summer,” said Heath. “We’re going to try to proceed to getting it through the line, and getting it together so we can start as soon as we know if we receive the grants.”
Health tells KNEB News additional parking is part of the project, the main portion of which will be backed by $500,000 already committed by the city’s KENO committee.
The grant is the same one received for the Dome Rock Diamonds Quad Fields project, and would not add any additional encumbrances on the park that are not already in place.
