Gering Arsonist Sentenced

A Gering man charged with starting several fires in 2022 has been sentenced.

57-year-old Raymond Martinez was put up in a local motel last year after a fire ignited in an old church in Gering he had been living in. Staff called authorities after Martinez destroyed the room and tried to set the curtains on fire.

Subsequent investigation revealed that Martinez was the one who started the blaze in the former church which resulted in seven people being displaced.

Last week, he was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 3 years of probation after he pled no contest to charges of 1st Degree Arson and Criminal Mischief (Less than $5,000).
