The German Harvestfest Committee proudly presented the proceeds from this year’s event to a pair of organizations Tuesday.
A check for $2,000 was given to the Legacy of the Plains to preserve the heritage of the German Russian display at the museum, and $3,000 to the Scotts Bluff County Fairgrounds to promote the fair and the importance of agriculture in our area.
The German Harvestfest held their 2nd event under their new name on October 7th. The purpose of the event is to celebrate the harvest in the area, agriculture, and the German Russian traditions of our area including a Polka dance, and also to celebrate the traditional foods.
This years celebration included Polka music from Bob Schmer and the River Boys, who had to travel in from 4 different states for the event, traditional German foods included: butterball and noodle soup, homemade rye bread, cheese, dill pickles, cabbage pockets by Painters Produce, Dina Kuchen, and garlic sausage. The event kicked off with the German meal, and then the Polka dance, and also a bakery sale of items left over after the meal was served. This year’s event was a success due to the generous sponsors of the event, the volunteers, the ticket sales and the bake sale.
Co-Chairs of the German Harvestfest Committee, Judy Meter and Dean Karmerzel announced that next year’s event date is tentatively scheduled for October 12th, at the Scotts Bluff County Fairgrounds.
