CHEYENNE, Wyo. – The Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team played tough against third-ranked Laramie County Community College Wednesday afternoon, but came up short in a 5-1 conference defeat to the Golden Eagles in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Raquel Ferreira said they played as best as they could with the low numbers on the roster and did well; they just couldn’t come up with a victory.

“Once again, we had difficulties with our numbers and we had to play with girls out of their current positions,” she said. “We knew it was not going to be a difficult game and we were prepared for the game with an expectation of victory. Unfortunately, the victory did not come, but I am content with the performance of all in the field.”

Ferreira was one of those players out of position as the usual defender was shifted to goalkeeper. She said she prefers playing as a defender, but was content with her performance.

“It was a surprise for me because I found out that I could not play during the warm-up,” she said. “Then, after talking to the coach, we decided to make this change so that we would not be without substitution on the field. Of course, I would prefer to be playing in my normal position, but I felt happy to be able to help the team in the way that I could.”

Laramie County took a quick 3-0 lead 18 minutes into the contest. After that, the Cougars played stronger against the 10-0 Golden Eagles.

LCCC’s Lauren Amerena scored the first three goals of the match off assists from Erika Scivally and Beyonce Robinson. The first came seven minutes into the contest with the second coming four minutes later. Amerena hit the hat trick 18 minutes into the half.

WNCC came back and got on the scoreboard in the 21st minute when Andrea Jimenez had an unassisted goal. WNCC trailed at halftime 3-1.

The second half saw Jayla Wulff score in the 65th minute off a Jadyn Tapia assist to make it 4-1 and shortly afterwards, Robinson scored off a Jenaya Brown assist.

LCCC had 35 shots and just four corner kicks while WNCC had four shots on goal. Jimenez had three shots on goal while Destiny Mueller had one shot on goal.

Ferreira, who was in net for the first time this year, had 19 saves in net.

WNCC will be back in action Friday when they host Casper College in a non-conference contest beginning with the women’s game at 1 p.m. and the men’s game to follow.

Ferreira said they will be ready for Casper. The last time the two squads played last week, Casper came away with a 2-0 win, scoring one goal in each half.

“We have already played against Casper and we know that it will be a good game,” she said. “Expectations are high and we are looking for victory.”
