It was a season opening double dip for Scottsbluff high school with both the girls and boys programs winning season opening Western Conference Tournament titles on Saturday at WNCC’s Cougar Palace.

In the girls title game it was Scottsbluff knocking off Sidney 61-45. After trailing by one at halftime the Lady Cats outscored Sidney 36-19 over the final two quarters to improve to 3-0 to start the season.

Scottsbluff was led in scoring by Mariyah Avila, she finished with 16 points, while fellow backcourt mate, Anna Kelley, had 15 in the win.

In the boys championship game it was the Bearcats knocking off Sterling, CO by the final of 50-42.

This one started fast with a combined seven three pointers between the two teams in the first quarter but then it settled in to a defensive type game with the Cats playing great on that end of the floor. Scottsbluff held Sterling to zero two point field goals in the second and third quarters.

Austin Thyne topped the Bearcats in scoring with 16 as they improved to 3-0 to open their season.

Both Gering teams finished the opening weekend with 2-1 records winning fifth place games on Saturday. The Gering girls beat Alliance 42-27 while the boys team bested Mitchell in a blowout by the final of 67-28.
