An independent non-profit organization that manages the nation’s largest private health insurance claims database and has access to Medicaid data paints a stark picture of the financial impact of COVID medical treatment.

Fair Health, Inc. has released details of the average and median costs for uninsured, in- and out-of-network treatment ranging from out-patient visits to cases involving ventilator use or admission to the intensive care unit.

Nevada had the highest uninsured or out-of-network cost for complex treatment, averaging more than $472,000, while Maryland had the lowest such average at just under $132,000.

Average costs for uninsured or out-of-network care in Nebraska were over $253,000 for complex treatment, under $59,000 for in-network treatment not involving ventilation or the ICU, and just under $2,000 for outpatient attention. For in-network care, the average costs were just under $92,000, $28,000 and a little more than $900 in the three treatment categories, respectively.

According to the Fair Health data, Wyoming and Colorado were on the higher end of the treatment cost scale, with South Dakota, Kansas and Iowa rates considered in the same range as Nebraska.
