Gunnison, Colo. — January 16, 2022 — The Chadron State College women’s basketball team (5-9, 4-5 RMAC) lost 83-80 in overtime at the Western Colorado Mountaineers (7-6, 5-3 RMAC) during a classic Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rivalry game Saturday afternoon.

Both teams traded blows throughout the game until a late three-pointer by the Mountaineers in overtime helped Western Colorado edge the Eagles in an overwise thrilling game. Chadron State is now 0-9 on the road this season.

The Eagles had a slow start to begin the game as the Mountaineers capitalized on two turnovers to go up 9-0. Samiyah Worrell got the team going by scoring the Eagles’ first points on a layup. She and Jori Peters each landed a three-pointer to help the Eagles tie the game at 12-12. The score was 19-16 Mountaineers at the start of the second quarter.

Chadron State’s best effort of the day came in the second quarter, where they shot 43.8% on field goals (7-16), 75% on three-pointers (3-4), and 75% on free throws (3-4). Although the Eagles scored 20 points in the second quarter and 11 points in the third, Western Colorado kept pace and held on to a 53-47 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Eagles outscored the Mountaineers 19-13 thanks in part to three-pointers landed by Worrell and Kadyn Comer. With six seconds left, Chadron State was up 66-64 after a Worrell fastbreak layup. With only one second left, Western’s Grace Kirscher put up a fastbreak layup of her own to send the game to overtime with the score tied at 66-66.

Worrell and Peters each landed a three-pointer to help keep it close in overtime. Western Colorado had two treys of their own, both of which came after the three-minute mark of the game to make it 74-71. Despite Peters making her three-pointer with 18 seconds left to go, it was not enough to win the game as the Eagles came up short 80-83 at the buzzer.

“I’m proud of our team,” said Head Coach Janet Raymer. “We competed hard. We will build from this experience.”

The Eagles will have another chance to earn their first road victory of the season when they travel to Spearfish, S.D. to face Black Hills State (7-7, 5-3 RMAC) on Tuesday, January 18 at 5:30 p.m.
