There’s plenty of baseball happening in the Scottsbluff/Gering area this weekend plus the start of the summer all-star circuit.

Here’s a little rundown of some of the events taking place.

Panhandle Prep Basketball

Tonight it’s the girls and boys annual Panhandle Prep Basketball games at Scottsbluff High School. Girls game will start at 5:30 with the boys action to follow. The dunk contest finals will be held at halftime of the girls game with the three-point finals between games.

We’ll carry the doubleheader tonight on 107.3 The Trail and KHYYfm.com starting at 5:15 with pregame, tip off for the girls game to start the night at 5:30 pm.

Pioneers off to fast start

For the college summer league season the Western Nebraska Pioneers are off to a 3-0 start after they swept their opening series from North Platte at Oregon Trail Park Stadium.

On Thursday night it was a 11-4 win as they were buoyed by a pair of homers from Garrett Esposito (Kaskaskia College) and they got another long ball from Garrett Fisher (Northern Colorado).

The Pioneers are hosting the Cage Rats (CO) this weekend and we’ll have coverage with Carson Trail on KNEB AM 960/100.3 FM for all three games. Coverage tonight and Saturday will start at 6:20 with the Sunday broadcast at 4:20.

Platte Valley Companies Legion Tournament

The Gering Platte Valley Companies Seniors are hosting their home tournament this weekend. Eight teams total are in town to play; Gering, Alliance, Chadron, Casper, Buckley, Gordon-Rushville, Wheatland, and Douglas.

Action starts this morning with Chadron vs. Alliance at 10 am followed by Alliance vs. Buckley, then Buckley plays Chadron and in the night cap for day one at 5:30 pm Gering gets Wheatland.

Tomorrow will feature five games and Gering will play Douglas tomorrow night at 7:30.

Each team has three pool play games to decide the championship matchup on Sunday night at 5:30.

WESTCO Zephyrs look for first win

It’s been a slow start in the win-loss column for the WESTCO Zephyrs as they’re 0-6 to begin the season and coming off two losses earlier this week against North Platte on the road.

They’ve got two opportunities on Saturday to pick up their first win or two of the season as they’ll host Lexington in a doubleheader at Cleveland Field starting at noon.
