Yellow Jackets surge past Eagles in second half

SPEARFISH, S.D. — January 18, 2022 — Bolstered by a 12-0 run that began after it had trailed 8-3, the Chadron State College men’s basketball team led most of the first half, twice by as many of 10 points, but Black Hills State cut the deficit to a single point—35-34—by halftime, eventually staged a 16-0 run, and went on to top the Eagles 83-65 Tuesday night in Spearfish.

With senior guard CJ Jennings scoring eight points in the five minutes of the second half, Chadron State rebuilt its lead to 48-43.  But the Eagles were scoreless during the next five minutes while the Yellow Jackets caught fire and were ahead 59-48 before the visitors scored again.

Chadron State eventually got its offense going again, but trailed by at least a dozen points during the final six minutes.

Black Hills is now 11-4 for the season and 9-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and the Eagles are 7-11 and 3-7.

Sparked by its 65.6% shooting in the second half, the Yellow Jackets shot 55.6% for the game, compared to Chadron State’s 43%. Each team sank nine 3-pointers with Jennings nailing five of six shots from behind the arc while tallying 21 points to lead the Eagles. Marcus Jefferson was next with 16 points.  KJ Harris and Teddy Parham added eight points apiece.

The Jackets’ 6-foot-7 junior forward Joel Scott led his team with 22 points and nine rebounds while senior guard Sindou Cisse had 15 points and eight rebounds.  Adam Moussa contributed 14 points.

Black Hills outrebounded the Eagles 35-24. Both teams had 13 turnovers.

Both will host South Dakota Mines for their next game. The Hardrockers will visit Spearfish on Thursday night and come to Chadron on Saturday night.
