April 15th, 2021 | GPS/WNCC Release

At a parent meeting held Tuesday evening at Gering High School, Western Nebraska Community College President, Dr. Carmen Simone, announced an expansion to the college’s dual credit partnership with GHS, significantly expanding opportunities for students.

Beginning fall 2021, Gering juniors and seniors will have access to 33 new course offerings due to this growing partnership. These include courses offered on the WNCC campus in the areas of Criminal Justice, Education, Automotive Technology, Collision Refinish & Repair, Welding, and WNCC’s newest program Diesel, Truck & Heavy Equipment Technology. In addition, Dr. Simone shared more dual credit courses have been added thanks to ongoing coordination to maximize instruction through GHS teachers who are certified to teach college level courses.

“We are thrilled to be expanding our dual credit offerings in partnership with Gering High School,” says Simone. “It takes a team to accomplish big things, and we could not be more pleased. Two college representatives, in particular, have worked hard to make this announcement possible – CollegeNOW! Director Mai Lee Olsen and Admissions Assistant Director Jolene Martin. I can’t thank them enough for assuring that students at Gering High School have fantastic opportunities to learn with us.”

Coordination between GHS and the college saw progress this spring as all students in grades 8-12 completed career interest inventories with WNCC personnel in order to enrich the counseling and course registration process.

“There has been a lot of communication, prioritizing, and collaboration with WNCC throughout this school year,” shares GHS Principal, Rocky Schneider. “All of it has been done with the core focus of increasing the opportunities for Gering students. We are excited to see it all come to fruition and are grateful to the WNCC team for their time and commitment,” Schneider continued.

In addition to the presentation during the parent meeting, WNCC instructors were on hand to provide program-specific information to Gering families and students.
