WNCC Adds Diesel, Heavy Equipment Tech Program for 2021

Western Nebraska Community College is planning on offering a new program next fall to help meet demand for workforce in some of the regions leading industries.

The WCCA Board of Governors Wednesday approved a new diesel, truck and heavy equipment technology program, intended to meet the need to fill positions in construction and agricultural medium to heavy equipment repair, as well as addressing generalized diesel truck technology.

WNCC Dean of Instruction and Workforce Development Educational Services Dr. Charlie Gregory tells KNEB News instruction outlines have already been created using a unique method called Developing a Curriculum, which draws skill-set knowledge directly from those in the targeted local industries.

“It was not the general managers, although they have seen the curriculum, ” said Gregory. “When we built the curriculum, we were working with the lead technicians, the service managers, those that are actually doing the job in the region.”

Gregory noted there was already a considerable demand for such instruction among area high school students, as a September survey this year found more than 30 students at Gering, Scottsbluff and Morrill High Schools expressed an interest in the proposed program.

Before the program can be marketed by WNCC and applications accepted, it will need to be approved by the Higher Learning Commission, and Nebraska’s Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education, but college officials say theyre confident the program will be approved next year by both entities ahead of the anticipated start date.
