It’s a busy week of road action for both the WESTCO Zephyrs and Gering Platte Valley Companies with the two area squads heading east for games, both on the diamond and in the stands, as they’ll finish with a stop at the College World Series in Omaha.

Gering has one game today at North Platte, then on Friday they’ll play Millard North in Kearney before a doubleheader on Saturday at Blair.

WESTCO will hit the field for their first games tomorrow when they have a doubleheder at Hastings followed by a Friday twin bill in Seward against Seward and Plattsmouth.

For Gering (14-3) tonight it’ll be their second matchup of the season against North Platte. They lost in the first game 10-3. That was one of only three losses on the Gering schedule so far this season. Rick Kinnaman says they’ll need to be ready for the speed of the game tonight, “They are a very fast team. We need to eliminate their speed by taking the outs they give us and not getting caught up in what they do. They have really, really good team speed.”

Gering is coming off a pair of wins over Buckley on Monday night.

The WESTCO Zephyrs will be seeing teams for the first time this year on the trip, starting with Area Tournament foe Hastings tomorrow night. The Z’s (13-12) got a pair of home wins over Thompson Valley (Loveland, CO) at home on Monday.

Z’s skipper Jeremiah Luber says this stretch of games goes along in way in preparation for the postseason next month, “Hastings, those are going to be a couple of big games. We’ve put ourselves in a pretty good position at 3-3 and you know if we could get a couple wins or even win one, that’s really going to help us out as far as Area seeding goes.”

After the two games at Hastings the Z’s have a pair of games in Seward on Friday.
