Those looking for a spot at Lake Minatare this Memorial Holiday weekend will find a mixture of availability this year.

Game and Parks officials say the 50 of 100 electrified camp sites available for reservation are mostly taken, with the other 50 first come, first served, and there’s really no limit on primitive sites around the lake.

Park Superintendent Dan Thornton tells KNEB News much of that primitive availability will be right on the beach this year. “It’s strange with Memorial Day that there’s this much beach but we’ve got a lot of beach camping as well,” said Thornton. “So, this time of year is very different. Usually we are pretty full by now, but they didn’t bring in water until about 2 or 3 weeks later than ‘normal’, so it will be different to have this much beach for the holiday.”

Thornton says for those heading out in a boat, you’ll want to be aware of other watercraft as there’s a little less water to spread around in, and definitely don’t drink and boat.

He also says those swimming near the inlet need to exercise some extra caution, since there’s a pretty good current as water continues to come into the lake.
