Dirt will fly at this weekend’s first “Triple Crown Motocross” event at the Platte Valley Dirt Riders MX track in Mitchell.

The triple crown will be April 24-25 and include the Tri-state Dirt Riders, High Plains Motorcycle Association (HPMA) of Wyoming, and the South Dakota Motorcycle Association (SDMA) with age divisions from as young as 4 years old to 70 years old.

“This will be the first year for the Triple Crown. We usually have a race in April and August in Mitchell and usually combine it with HPMA, we average two to three hundred bikes in those races,” said Scott Hayward president of Platte Valley Dirt Riders.

The track is a mile long, which is one of the smaller tracks on the Tri-State circuit, but it is also one of the fastest. While the track is smaller, it will take a lot of volunteers to get the track ready and then keep it going.

“It’s a huge amount of work, but the community usually comes together on race week to help,” Hayward said.

Right now, with two days full of rides, the event is in need of volunteers and sponsors. Volunteers will help with putting up speakers, taking money at the gate, helping work the track with water and flags.

Some of the big sponsors, who have helped every year include GT-Mart in Mitchell, Floyds in Scottsbluff, Christian Motorcycle Association of Torrington, Wyo., and the Mitchell High School students.

Events will begin Saturday and Sunday around 8:30 a.m., there will be food vendors and the cost is $10 at the gate.

For more information or to volunteer contact Hayward at 970-590-1291 or visit the Platte Valley Dirt Riders Facebook page.
