A 41-year-old woman was arrested Monday night after police investigated a report of a male stabbing victim laying in the roadway outside of a Sidney apartment building.

Rena Willburn was taken into custody on suspicion of first degree assault, terroristic threats, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony and first degree false imprisonment during the course of the investigation.

In the arrest affidavit, Sidney police say the victim said Willburn had stabbed him with a knife and returned to an apartment, and officers apprehended her trying to leave one of the apartment entrances.

The woman claimed the boyfriend stabbed himself so she would be arrested after he had been teaching her how to defend herself and that would make the story believable. Willburn also said the victim had struck her in the face, and showed officers her lip was cut.

After investigators located the weapon and found a pillow and blankets with blood in a bedroom, they interviewed the victim at Sidney Regional Medical Center, at which time he said the pair had been arguing and she pulled out a knife and stabbed him, saying repeatedly she was going to kill him.

The victim also said after retreating to the bedroom to get away from Willburn, she took his phone and prevented him from leaving or getting care for his wounds for about an hour, and when she left to talk to neighbors across the hallway, he escaped.

Witnesses reported hearing the victim yell “you stabbed me” and asking Willburn to call 911, and shortly thereafter she told them the victim was fine but was drunk.

Willburn was lodged in the Cheyenne County Jail.
