The Scottsbluff Kiwanis Club made a sizeable donation to the Cooperative Ministries Weekend Food Backpack program Thursday.
A $2,500 check was presented to the food insecurity organization during the Kiwanis weekly meeting at the Western Nebraska Regional Airport.
Backpack program coordinator Tracy Steele thanked Kiwanians for their support, saying community generosity goes a long way when they can buy in bulk. “We buy in pallets. We go and buy pallets of Chef Boyardee or pallets of peanut butter, and so we can get better prices. So this will help immensely, and give us a month or so’s worth for backpacks that are packed already. So that is amazing.” Steele said
Steele says the needs have grown over the years and continues to be significant.
She says she started with less than three dozen, and now the PupPack and CatPack programs typically serve 500 or more kids weekly by the end of the school year.
