With 10 applications submitted, a multiple-step process now begins to determine who will succeed John Brehm as the next Veterans Service Officer for Scotts Bluff County.

County Management Accountant Lisa Rien gave an outline to County Commissioners Monday, saying it starts with a review of the applicants Oct. 28.

Rien tells KNEB News a first round of interviews involving the Veterans Committee will take place early next month. “We might interview all ten, if they’re eligible applicants and we want to meet them all. And from that Nov. 4 interview day, we want to ween it down to three people or less to come to final interview on Nov. 8,” said Rien. “And then, the Veterans’ Service Committee is expected to come to the next board meeting.”

Rein says before the County Board gets a chance to approve the appointment Nov. 15, the Nebraska Veterans’ Affairs Department will need to certify the successful candidate meets all state requirements.

Only those who have received an honorable discharge after serving on active duty, and have been a state resident for at least a year, are eligible to fill the post.
